Rippavilla Guided Tours

Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, Rippavilla Plantation is rich in Southern history and tradition. School groups are welcomed and encouraged to take part in either (or both) of our educational tours.

Plantation Life

Tour the 1855 mansion and learn about the Cheairs family, as well as slave life on the plantation. Exercise map reading skills while creating your own map of the property as you visit your selected sites. In addition, learn about life as a child on the plantation through Sarah and William’s experience.

Students may also engage in a scavenger hunt around the grounds as they take a self-guided tour of the property. The self-guided tour may include the Freedmen Bureau’s school house, Slave Cabin, Family and Slave Cemetery, Brown’s Stand and the Corn Crib.

The Civil War Experience

Discover the Cheairs family contributions and plantation life during the Civil War. Learn where troops were encamped, share in the typical experience of a soldier, and how the family ultimately survived. Learn about the effects of war on both sides – North and South.

This tour will exhibit samples of food for the children to view, Civil War artifacts, and clothing of both civilians and soldiers. Students may also engage in a scavenger hunt on the grounds as they take a self-guided tour of the property. The self-guided tour may include the Freedmen Bureau’s school house, Slave Cabin, Family and Slave Cemetery, Brown’s Stand and the Corn Crib.
